MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE
Movement is Medicine
Sparking Joy, Play, and Human Connection in Hospital Dementia Wards
Movement is Medicine transforms clinical environments into vibrant spaces of expression, laughter, and vitality. Tailored specifically for acute and aged-care dementia wards, our program merges a dance-theatre approach with music as a key stimulator, using mixed creative devices like movement, voice, and character to awaken curiosity and rebuild community.
At its core, all that is required is a willingness to explore the unknown through creative agency and co-creation. With a large dollop of play as the essential ingredient, we meet every patient right where they are. We create a safe, stimulating space where imagination leads, non-verbal connection thrives, and individuals are empowered to dance, move, sing, and express joy in their own unique way, ensuring they feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued.
The Clinical & Creative Impact
Beyond the smiles and spontaneous applause, Movement is Medicine delivers grounded, evidence-backed health outcomes rooted in person-centred care:
Neuro-Cognitive Activation
Multi-sensory storytelling and play-based movement stimulate neural pathways, supporting memory retrieval, spatial awareness, and executive functioning to help slow cognitive decline.
Emotional Regulation & Mood Elevation
Playful social engagement releases endorphins and reduces cortisol, significantly decreasing BPSD (Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia) such as agitation, anxiety, and apathy.
Functional Mobility & Motor Control
Rhythmic, accessible physical exercises improve circulation, maintain joint flexibility, and support better balance, body alignment, and spatial orientation.
Agency & Non-Verbal Communication
Theatre and dance transcend language barriers, restoring a sense of identity, personal agency, and meaningful non-verbal connection for individuals experiencing advanced communication changes or aphasia.
Creative Caring isn’t just about managing dementia, it’s about celebrating life, dignity, and expression, one fabulous movement at a time.
